Amisfield Primary // Work Experience to aid research for COP3

The School

Amisfield Primary School is a small village school with a friendly feel in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland.  The school has two classes, the younger class aged 5 to 8 and the older class are aged 9 to 12.  (In Scotland there are seven years at Primary School Level)

Why

I felt that it would be really important to get some work experience in a Primary School to help in my understanding of my chosen subject.

As my trip in December had to be fitted around college and other commitments, I chose to do this experience in a primary school which is not far from my home town where I have previously helped out in the primary 1,2, 3 & 4 classroom.  I felt that this would be a good place to gain experience as the children already knew me a bit and felt comfortable around me.

I also already have the backing from the teachers there, who also filled out my survey with some great feedback.

What

It was my task to complete the task which the specialist Art Teacher had been working on with the pupils the previous week.

The pupils had all began by painting a snowy wintery background as instructed by their art teacher and in order to complete the task, they were to create a silhouette in the foreground which was to be in black.

From what I had learned from researching my essay I knew that children would find it more engaging if they were allowed to make decisions within their work as they would feel like they had more ownership over it.  Considering this, while preparing before the children arrived in the morning, with permission from their teacher I decided to allow the children to decide which medium they wanted to use to create the black silhouette and drew up a few different idea's of what they may have liked to do as a silhouette (as the art teacher had left only 1 example of what it might be) - always emphasizing that these were just suggestions and that the children could come up with their own idea if they wished.  I knew from research also that instead of just saying 'do as you please,' that children require structure in order to get things done.

Experience

I was slightly nervous at first but of course in the end I thoroughly enjoyed teaching the children.  I worked in the art space and the teacher sent children over to me in groups of three or four to complete their artwork.  You could see that the children were excited about choosing and deciding on what they might paint or collage.  Some children spent a long time on theirs being very accurate and others were more rushed but all pupils seemed to enjoy the exercise and were extremely excited to see their work up on the display wall when the paint or glue had finally dried.

How this has informed my research and understanding?

Throughout the day I gradually began to understand more about what sort of level children were working at, at what age.  As I am writing in my project about how to encourage creativity it also helped me to see from a teachers point of view, what teaching is like and what it is like leading a creative task.  It was beneficial to myself as working with children and art is something that I am particularly interested in, which is why I have decided to use this topic for my research project.  Teaching the children in small groups meant that I could monitor behaviour and as the class is only a small number you get to know the children a bit and I could see that they were all well behaved for me and they all seemed to enjoy the task in hand.

Doing this visit has made me understand about childrens learning more than I would have understood if I had solely read books.  Both forms of research have gone hand in hand for me and I feel like I know so much more now than I did at the beginning.  I also feel like this is a field I am interested in working in after university.

Studio Visit // East Street Arts

East Street Arts is a Charitable Organisation which supports practicing professional artists by supplying reduced rent studio's within creative environments.

Based in different locations over Leeds:

Patrick Studios, St Mary's Lane, Mabgate (the one I visited)

The organisation also takes on temporary spaces at reduced rates by offering to landlords with empty buildings that they open up studio space there for a while.  This works because the organisation is a charity it means that the landlord can pay less (to the government) than he would normally have to pay for having an empty building.

Patrick Studio's seems like a friendly environment to work within for a range of practicing artists.  The space however is mostly available for people more like fine artists rather than graphic designers who can perhaps make a better/ more regular wage.

While visiting I picked up a couple of lovely looking publications to hopefully learn more about the place.

This is a scan from one of the publications I picked up, it shows the communal space where artists meet and students are also allowed to use the facilities here, the macs and the printers, and tea & coffee making facilities.

Studiooooos

I have just came across an illustration studio based in shoreditch, London.  The work they create is exactly what I love and I would love to possibly do a placement with them even though the thought scares me a little, however the thought of working in a corporate graphic design studio terrifies me so I am happy I've found somewhere to aspire to be :)

The Studio is called Paper & Cloth and they create beautiful artwork.

Another Illustration Studio I came across recently which is based in Glasgow (my favourite Scottish City).  David Galletly

Eden Festival // Festival Placement

A cut out from the local paper ^

This summer I worked for a week with the Art & Deco Team at Eden Festival in Dumfries & Galloway.  The experience was great for me as I have a passion for festivals and really want to do more festival work in the future.  I would like to, at some point set up my own festival decor business (something which I may pursue this year).

I gained a lot from the experience and undertook some weird and wonderful tasks.  I was out of my comfort zone slightly as I didn't know anyone and camping by myself, but I am glad that I did it by myself, as I now feel that I have the confidence to do it again in the future.

This is the tent where the deco team were based.  It is a fabulous old Indian Wedding Tent, such an inspirational place to work from.

Studio Visit // Wee Byre Studio // Craft

For my practice it seems appropriate that I should be visiting crafters and makers studio's, more so than graphic design studio's, as it is what I am interested in, what I want to do, and what I am good at.  I began by first visiting the 'Wee Byre Studio' which is an open studio of craft just up the hill from my village at home.

My village:

Wee Byre Studio:  Helen Houston creates mirrors and blackboards from upcycled driftwood she finds.  She also produces lovely photography prints.  It was good to see someone making a living from making things.

The Final Business Cards

As I am now obsessed with bunting and also selling it, I thought perhaps a nice way to hand someone a business card would be to wrap it up in a bunting triangle (as I have loads of spares anyway).

This is just a temporary fixing but I do like the effect, however I am unsure how suitable it is.

Below is another example of a fabric wallet which I have created, which could act as a wallet for all business cards that someone is handed.

PPP Business Card New Concept

I have already printed off and finalised my designs for "Brand You" but am not particularly happy with them.  I have just been playing around with a possible new concept for my branding or more for my business card design.  This is something I will have to consider and develop over summer.  I love Ice-Cream, especially ones that come on sticks.

Possible Alternative Work Placement Idea's

As I am interested in doing things other than just graphic design, however still art based, I have been having a think of some possible places where I could perhaps do a work placement.  Whatever I choose to do I wish to use the knowledge and skills which I have learned so far on the course.

I am interested in working with young children and art, also interested in working at festivals.

Hope House Gallery

"Music and Arts Production (MAP) is a Leeds based arts organisation at Hope House that provides alternative education for young people who are having difficulty accessing mainstream education. The Hope House Gallery occasionally holds exhibitions and events, using both internal and external art."

Eden Arts

Eden Arts is an arts development agency based in Eden in Cumbria. It programmes arts events and activities in a rural context. Eden Arts is funded to develop and deliver strategic programmes of work across the district and to encourage arts engagement and participation wherever possible.

Eden Arts is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation based in England’s biggest and most rural district, Eden in Cumbria. Eden Arts promotes, invents, dreams and cooks up all sorts of creative projects from commissions to participatory to gigs and cinema.

Eden Arts also do projects with children and community based projects, as it is close to home, I think this is a possibility throughout the summer.

Eden Festival (different from the above)

Eden is a welcoming, atmospheric, family friendly festival, located in the stunning Raehills Meadows.

The whole aim behind the festival is to provide a 3 day celebration of music, dance, colour, culture and community built on an ecologicaly sound and carbon friendly set of principles and to exhibit live music hand in hand with stunning decorations and surroundings.

I now have a place working with the Visual Arts and Deco Team at Eden Festival 2013, very happy!  I will be at the festival for a whole week helping out with creating artwork and putting it up. Exciting :) and hopefully I will get to know a few people and get into doing more artwork for more festivals!
